The Problem

In the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, significant flooding has caused over 10,000 people to be displaced on the Doce River in Governor Valadares alone. Such events cause extensive material and human damage and significant economic losses.

Our Solution

GlobalTrust carried out numerical analyses to demonstrate the water extent variability over time (image on right). Interestingly, the algorithm picked up a greater water extent in January 2020. This is not unexpected as in January 2020 Minas Gerais experienced another heavy year of rainfall with large, localised flooding events. Water extent was calculated using the Modified Normalised Water Difference Index (NWDI). Additionally, a turbidity index was used across the data to numerically map the change in sediment load across the two years to enhance the final analysis.
